A Sealed Scroll

The Catholic scholar continued,

“This scroll contained the beginning of Surah 96 of the Qur’an (Koran), entitled “Clots of Blood” because man is supposedly created from this substance.”

There is an issue with the accuracy of this opinion. There was no scroll that he was ordered to memorize.  Rather, the angel Gabriel simply ordered him to recite what was inspired in him to recite, and forcibly impelling him to do so by squeezing him tight until he did. “Iqra!” means, “read aloud,” and the order confused the Prophet because he was illiterate anyway, and there was no scroll to read from besides. Thus he would have been unable to read a scroll even if there was one.

Strangely enough, there is a reference to such a scripture being revealed to one who could not read in the Bible.

For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep. He has shut your eyes, the prophets, and He has covered your heads, the seers. The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed book, which when they give it to the one who is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”

Then the book will be given to the one who is illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I cannot read.” (Isaiah 29:10-12)

This is the book that Jesus refers to, when he tells his disciples,   “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own initiative, but whatever he hears, he will speak; and he will disclose to you what is to come.” (John 16:12-13)

The Qur’an is a book many people cannot hear now, and cannot read (with any understanding). It is sealed up to them because they say ‘it is supposed to be the word of God’. The one who writes such a statement is really saying that some people (other than him and the group he belongs to) say it is the word of God, and many believe it is the word of God, but he himself neither says it or believes it and supposes it to be the opposite.
